The Fanad Head Lighthouse stands on the wild, rocky headland of the peninsula known as Fanad in County Donegal, guarding the mouth of Lough Swilly, which forms a natural harbour of refuge.
The current lighthouse was built in 1886, replacing an earlier light built in 1817 in response to the wrecking of the frigate Saldana, prompting Captain Hill to demand action.
