On the Hatrside Pass, below the summit

The Hartside Pass is a mountain pass in the North Pennines within Cumberland, by which the A686 crosses from the dale of the South Tyne westwards from Alston Moor across the Pennine fells toward the Eden Valley. As the pass ends, the road comes off the hills and descends to Melmerby.

The head of the pass, known as Hartside Top, is at 1,904 feet, in a bend below Fiend's Fell, a subsidiary top of Melmerby Fell, and from this prominence there are magnificent views across the county and over Solway Firth to Galloway.

The pass is a long and steep climb, and forms part of the Sea to Sea Cycle Route.

From the viewpoint at the Hartside Top café, the visitor can see Helvellyn, Great Gable, Skiddaw, and over the firth to Criffel.
