Information |
Cotherstone Bridge is a footbridge bridge which crosses the River Tees, from County Durham on the north bank to the North Riding of Yorkshire on the south, near Cotherstone on the Yorkshire side. The bridge links two stretches of the Teesdale Way, either side of the river.
Immediately downstream, on the Yorkshire bank, the River Balder joins the Tees, and is itself crossed by another footbridge on the Teesdale Way.
The bridge was built in 1932 to replace an earlier suspension bridge: in 1929, a cable snapped when 40 people were crossing the suspension bridge, killing one. A preceding bridge, a timber bridge, was replaced following flood damage in 1881.
