Scotton is a small village in the West Riding of Yorkshire; a small place, with a population of 624 at the 2011 census.

The village is just north of the River Nidd, where it flows through the Nidd Gorge.[1][2] However it is not of Nidderdale itself; all the streams flowing through the village and the parish run eastwards by way of the River Tutt to empty into the River Ure in Wensleydale.

Scotton may be found three miles north of Harrogate, and a mile north-west of Knaresborough.

Churches

  • Church of England: St Thomas the Apostle: the church was consecrated in May 1889; before this, worship used to be held in a house in the village.[3][4]
  • Methodist: Scotton Methodist Church[5]

History

The village appears in the Domesday Book as Scotone[6] and is listed as belonging to Gilbert Tison with only two households.[7]

Scotton was the home of Guy Fawkes during his teenage years,[8] The village still has a traditional Guy Fawkes Night celebration, which is popular for miles around, but they do not burn their fomer neighbour in effigy as in other villages.[9] One of the old houses near the present-day church was the setting of a local folktale that the Gunpowder plot was concocted there; however, Speight determines that there is no evidence that Fawkes visited the village after 1603, which makes this tale extremely unlikely.[10]

About the village

The local pub is the Guy Fawkes Arms.[11][12]

Scotton has a village hall,[13] but no shop, as the post office closed down rather than become a national lottery outlet.

  • Cricket: Scotton Cricket Club
  • Football: boys and girls junior football teams
