Greater London

Why did my Greater London page get deleted, do you guys just not recognise Greater London and the administrative/ceremonial counties or something?

SouthLondonsBoroughz

New contributors are always welcome. There is a such a wealth of towns and villages and hills and grand houses out there, and the more who can contribute with a love of their homes the better. We don't however do administrative entities here - it is for places, all in traditional counties. Local administration is a distraction that can lead to the wrong picture, so bureaucratic divisions and entities are shunned. We are strict about that. There is far more beauty in ancient Middlesex than something invented by a Whitehall mandarin. RB (talk) 15:42, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

JavaScript Collapsible

Hello there, I presume you are the Administrator of the site? I was wondering whether it would be possible for you to copy over a file called Common.js so that it's template could be used here on Wikishire. I have noticed that WikiShire has been lacking in some of the templates that Wikipedia has (which I use mainly) and over the past few minutes I have added some in that I would like to use mainly to do with tables really. Anyway this template allows for things to become 'collapsible' which means that you can 'hide' and 'show' information on a page. It also adds other features. It is in JavaScript however, it is not a plain template which means you need to be an Admin to do it. As this is powered by MediaWiki I think all that needs doing is that the source code from here -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js <- needs to be copied to here -> http://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js <-. That's certainly how templates work anyway though my knowledge of JS isn't as proficient. Would it be possible for you to give it a go? Yours sincerely, Yaxley 04:05, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Page needing Deletion

Hi, I assume you are an administrator here? If so, I have noticed that a page entitled "The House at the End of the Street" has popped up which appears to be a load of rambling nonsense, not at all relevant to this Wiki. Zacwill16 16:10, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

Never mind, it's gone now. Zacwill16 19:34, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello

Hi RB,

I've created a new article about the football club in my local area. I want to make this a constructive, informative article relevant to the area. I will go in depth about the team and the places we play at.

I'm hoping it will attract players and people to both the club and area respectively. I've seen a couple of articles slightly similar.

I just wanted to check that everything was OK. Editing can be very time consuming so I didn't want to make something unnecessarily. I hope that you can be accommodating to my requests. I know you don't have many active users but I will try my best to be as active as I can.

Many thanks

Stuart

New Templates

Hi RB (talk), I have some code from Wikipedia regarding the infobox templates. How is it best to give it to you?? Via email? Or shall I just copy and paste it here? All the best. Stu

Hi RB. I see you've done the template for the kit. As you know, not great with code so I would like to ask if you can put two (home and away kits) into the info box. The home kit is red shirts with white sleeves, white shorts and red socks and the away kit is sky blue shirts, white shorts and sky blue socks. Very basic and simple. I have asked Owain to set up the squad table. Once done, I can concentrate on the easy stuff of building the content of the article. I really appreciate your time and effort on helping me get the article off the ground.

Contacting Admin

hi, can you tell me who is admin for this wiki as would like to impliment a map the same as you use on my wiki and need instructions on how to do this (http://wikishire.co.uk/map)

There is a really easy way to do it if you are not familiar with the OpenLayers JavaScript library. Take a look at Wikishire:Map#Map widgets for a simple one-line method for your own site. Let me know how you get on! Owain (talk) 07:14, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello!

We are happy to have you here at Wikishire! Highest User (talk) 23:19, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Well I hope so, since I created it. RB (talk) 06:04, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Well, yes we are; I created new templates, for example: {{welcome}}. You should always use it like this:
{{subst:welcome|signature=yes}}
to welcome new users without a talk page. Highest User (talk) 15:13, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

I want to upload

Hi. Can I be an administrator to help with blocking, protecting, deleting, editing protected pages, and other stuff? Please give me this right. Thank you. Highest User (talk) 00:57, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Request to be a bureaucrat on Saturday, June 15, 2019

I want to be a bureaucrat to help with giving adding rights to or removing rights from other users on Wikishire because:
I still want to give myself the right to be an administrator if I can’t upload files.

Thank you. Highest User (talk) 17:32, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

{{decline}} and {{accept}}

Hello. {{Decline}} and {{Accept}} have 2 things. If you use {{decline|strong}} it gives:

Strong decline

If you use {{decline|weak}} it gives:

Weak decline

Now for the accept template: If you use {{accept|strong}} it gives:

Strong accept

If you use {{accept|weak}} it gives

Weak accept

You can still use {{Accept}} or {{Decline}} without any thing.

Thank you. Highest User (talk) 23:21, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi again

Hi, are you Reid Bouchard, a student at Lynn Fripps Elementary (21020 83 Ave)? Highest User (talk) 03:23, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

No. RB (talk) 06:22, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
I was thinking the abbreviation RB stands for Reid Bouchard. What does your username stand for? Highest User (talk) 22:02, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Do something for me

Hello. I’d like you to create MediaWiki:Customcssprotected and MediaWiki:Customjsprotected. Please insert the following code into these pages:

{{protected page text/interface}}

Put the parameters type in.

Directions: Put in the pipe and then the parameter that I told you to put in, then the style names which are behind the dashes. Thank you. Highest User (talk) 02:44, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

No: the wiki works well and does what it should. We are not introducing external, hidden code to do goodness-knows-what from an untrusted source. Wikishire is not some schoolboy project: it is a substantial resource developed over many years with input from IT professionals, geographers, photographers, graphic artists, vexillologists and lawyers and which provides links and data to countless outside parties. Its integrity is paramount.RB (talk) 08:39, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Then get me to be an administrator. Highest User (talk) 14:08, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Hey

Can you install TitleBlacklist? Administrators can use TitleBlacklist to blacklist any title. If you want to use comments, they should start with "#". There are some options, surrounded in <>, separated by pipes:

  • noedit - which prevents the page from being edited or created
  • autoconfirmed - which allows only autoconfirmed users to create
  • editonly - which does not affect who can create pages, but prevents only editing
  • moveonly - which does not affect who can create or edit pages, but prevents only moving
  • reupload - which blacklists the file from being uploaded
  • casesensitive - don’t ignore case when checking title for being blacklisted
  • errmsg - displays a different error message other than "Titleblacklist-forbidden-edit" (e.g. if you were to use errmsg, you would use it like this: <errmsg=error message here (without "MediaWiki:" prefix)>)

If you were to use multiple options like noedit and autoconfirmed you would use it like this: <noedit|autoconfirmed>.

Remember, <newaccountonly> is no longer useful (as it says at w:MediaWiki:Titleblacklist). And only <antispoof> can be used at Meta. If you were to blacklist a page with a namespace you want to blacklist, like "Template", you would use Template:.*. If you were to blacklist a subpage of another page (with subpages enabled), for example, "Wikishire:Policies", you would use Wikishire:Policies\/.*.

The system message "Titleblacklist-forbidden-edit" defaults to the following text:
The title "$2" has been banned from creation. It matches the following blacklist entry: $1

Thank you. Highest User in Hawaii (talk) 00:52, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

And even install Scribunto. Thanks! Highest User in Hawaii (talk) 01:11, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

That is an interesting idea: thanks for the suggestion. We do have anti-spam protection (which can be overactive on occasion: using the phrase "University of Essex" and "campus" was once blocked when it spotted the last three letters of one and first three letters of the next together). A title block option is already there, but not in fact used. RB (talk) 13:07, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Alright, okay. I just wanted to, for TitleBlacklist, to blacklist titles, and for Lua, to make a module for {{Pagetype}}. Highest User in Hawaii (talk) 15:10, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
Well, I don't know where Lua is, but if it is not in the British Isles nor a British overseas territory, then we do not cover it. RB (talk) 15:42, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
I meant Scribunto, which only uses Lua. See its description page and the Lua reference manual for more information. Highest User in Hawaii (talk) 16:28, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
No - too dangerous. There are mechanisms to stop spam, and introducing backdoor programmes ids not the way to do it. RB (talk) 17:10, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

Spam page found!

I found this page Introduction: Gay Porn Right Away that was created by the spammer Pearline76L whilst patrolling the recent changes and it has been tagged for deletion. Please also block this user and their IP address! --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 06:09, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Sweeney Mountains are in Antarctica!

The Sweeney Mountains (75°06′S 069°15′W) is a group of mountains of moderate height and about 64 km (40 mi) extent, located 48 km (30 mi) north of the Hauberg Mountains in Palmer Land, Antarctica. --LeicesterLass (Talk to me!) 21:13, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

New editor here! And a London related question

Hello RB! I'm new to Wikishire and am liking it so far. As I am sure you can see, I've been making quite a few edits to articles relating to the metropolitan area of London. I hope you are of the view that these contributions have been positive.

The metropolis of London covers, as you know, five counties. However infobox parameters only allow for four (we have "county 1", "county 2", "county 3", "county 4", but no "county 5"). Would we be able to have a "county 5" parameter so we can fit Hertfordshire? --Jettisoned (talk) 22:44, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

You are quite right, and I do appreciate your help on this. Things put in years ago certainly need sprucing up, and maybe a poetic touch, and it is good to have other eyes and hands on board.
When we started this, towns spreading across county borders were one of those 'think about it later' things. I even put a specific line of code in to deal with specific examples that would be coming up (Todmorden and Mossley). Owain later sorted it out with "county 1", "county 2" etc. I could try adding "county 5" - the alternative is to abandon the Infobox in this case and just put the categories in at the bottom. RB (talk) 23:04, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi again RB! Sorry for the slow reply. Thanks for adding the "county 5" parameter - it seems to fit perfectly in the London infobox. Glad to be on board, and glad to hear my edits are appreciated! I'm sure our paths will cross again soon! --Jettisoned (talk) 18:47, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
