Went Hill
Yorkshire
Summit: 246 feet; SE476185
53°39’40"N, 1°16’51"W

Went Hill is a prominent hill in the south-east of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It climbs only to 246 feet at its summit, but in the low ground by the River Went its escarpment rising sharply above the road between Pontefract and Wentbridge makes it a landmark.

The scarp runs north-westwards for a mile and a half from the River Went, and in the other direction the river downstream runs between steep wooded banks for a mile eastwards. The Great North Road runs southward to the Went over the dip slope of the hill.

Professor Michael Wood has argued that Went Hill is the location known as Weondun in the histories by Simeon of Durham, as the location of the Battle of Brunanburh. He identifies Brunanburh itself as the Roman fort at Robin Hood's Well by Burghwallis (Brunnanburh meaning 'Well Fort').
