Thirn is a village in the North Riding of Yorkshire close to the River Ure, about three miles south-west of Bedale.
The hamlet is recorded in the Domesday Book, and the name derives from the Old English þyrne, meaning thorn-bush.[1][2][3] Historically the hamlet was in the ecclesiastical parish of Thornton Watlass, in the wapentake of Hang East.[4][5]
There is a former Wesleyan Chapel which is located on the road to Thornton Watlass,[5] and a former public house (The Boot & Shoe).[6]
