Penrith and The Border |
Sockbridge is a small village in the very north of Westmorland, on the south bank of the River Eamont, which forms the border with Cumberland. The closest town is Penrith in the latter county, two miles to the north-north-east.
Adjoining Sockbridge are two hamlets within the same parish, Tirril and Thorpe, both once separate places but now, in effect, one with Sockbridge as they have grown together. The a minor beck, the Lady Beck, separates Sockbridge from Tirril to the south-east and little of note separates it from Thorpe to the west.
Anciently, Sockbridge was a township in the parish of Barton.
About the village
The village is just outside the Lake District National Park: the bounds of the Park are less that half a mile to the west though, marked by the parish boundary with the parishes of Askham and Barton.
Sockbridge is mainly residential.
At one time there was a pony trekking centre here, but the centre closed in 2013 following the death of the proprietor.
In 2017 the local council approved an application to build 30 houses in Sockbridge and Tirril, a decision, which given the limited infrastructure of the villages, was strongly opposed locally.[1]
