Barton is a hamlet and parish in north-western Westmorland, adjacent to the border with Cumberland. The civil parish is on the edge of the Lake District National Park, and had a population of 232 according to the 2001 census,[1] increasing slightly to 238 at the 2011 Census.[2] It includes the small hamlet of Barton and the village of Pooley Bridge. The ancient parish incorporates the townships of High Barton; Low Winder; Stockbridge and Tirril; Yanwath and Eamont Bridge; and the chapelries of Martindale; and Patterdale-with-Hartsop.
Etymology
Whaley suggests that 'Barton' is 'the barley farm or outlying grange', from Old English 'beretūn' or, more probably, 'bærtūn', which was used of farms, especially outliers of large estates, used for storing crops.[3]
