Rutter Force and Mill
River: Hoff Beck
NY681157
Co-ordinates: 54°32’11"N, 2°29’35"W

Rutter Force is a lovely waterfall cascading over black rocks beside an old watermill in Westmorland. Here the Hoff Beck drops in a broad stream coming into the Eden Valley, just a couple of miles before it enters the River Eden itself. The falls are just two miles from Appleby-in-Westmorland.

A long-distance trail known as the Dales High Way, having followed the beck down this far, passes the waterfall before heading off to Appleby.

Rutter Force is more accessible than many Lake District waterfalls and has (limited) car parking close by. It is well signposted from the nearby road from Appleby to Orton. There is a ford here too (not to be tried when the beck is in spate). For walkers the waterfall can be taken in as part of an Eden Valley ramble amongst the network of footpaths from Appleby-in-Westmorland.
