The young Hoff Beck

The Hoff Beck is a stream in Westmorland, running from the Lake District fells to join the River Eden just downstream from Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The stream rises in the hills above Great Asby and flows northwards down towards the Eden Valley. For most of its course from Great Asby it is followed by a long distance walking route, the Dales High Way.

About a mile above Hoff, which gives the beck its name, the waters tumble over a delightful waterfall, Rutter Force, beside a watermill named Rutter Mill. Two miles below Hoff (after the dales High Way has wandered off to Appleby) the beck discharges its waters into the River Eden.
