| Information | |
New Elvet Bridge is a modern road bridge over the River Wear in Durham city centre. It relieved the mediæval Elvet Bridge just downstream.
The bridge was built as part of the traffic relief scheme of which Milburngate Bridge is also a part, but the New Elvet Bridge did not open until 8 years later. The two bridges allow traffic to pass from west to east of the city while avoiding the centre and its two ancient bridges.
It is of a balanced cantilever construction of concrete beams on two concrete piers.
