Mapperley is a village in eastern Derbyshire, standing seven miles to the north-east of the county town, Derby and two miles north-west of Ilkeston. The 2011 census recorded a population of 289.

The village is on a loop off the A609 Nottingham to Belper road. A minor road leading to Shipley was closed in 2007.[1]

Parish church

The parish church is Holy Trinity;[2] an unusual, modernist building, standing at the top of the hill. The western gable is made of plain glass, as are the south windows, which command a spectacular view over the local countryside.

The first church for the village was built in 1851: before then, St Wilfrid’s in West Hallam served the village. There was a small chapel within the walls of the local estate, but solely for the use of the lord of the manor. The new church, Holy Trinity, was a stone building in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret containing two bells, dated 1851. 5 tubular bells were installed in 1890, to replace the original two bells. In 1870, Mapperley became an ecclesiastical parish on its own.

Mining damaged the Victorian church: subsidence from the local coal mines affected it so badly that it had to be demolished in 1964. The National Coal Board agreed to finance a new church, which had to be designed to withstand any further subsidence. It was built on a concrete raft, with large A-framed beams as the main church support, giving it a modern triangular appearance.

The new Holy Trinity Church was opened in April 1966.

The font from the earlier church has been placed in the churchyard: a more modern font is installed in the church. The open-plan of the church provides space also used for village functions and by the local Church of England primary school. The entrance door has a stained glass window depicting the early mining activities in the area.
