Some of the Bridestones

The Bridestones are a set of rocks weirdly carves by the wind of countless ages, at a height of some 1,400 feet above sea-level on the moors north of Todmorden. The stones stand in the West Riding of Yorkshire, close by the border of Lancashire (which runs through the middle of the town, to the south).

The stones are outcrops of millstone grit , extending half a mile across the moor. One, ‘The Great Bridestone’ is so carved and weathered at its base that it looks like a bottle placed precariously on its end. The local myths about the formation of the rocks are numerous, and the interpretations too, for rocks that look like a man's head, or a bear, or fantastical beasts.
