| Information | |
Brasside Bridge is a steel footbridge crossing the River Wear in County Durham, and out of use ,with access blocked.
When open this was a walkers' bridge, remote, reached at the end of a long track off a minor road near Leamside, reached down steps the river and hidden among the trees. It is a bowstring arch in structure.
In previous day, a wooden railway bridge crossed the Wear here on the Lambton Railway, carrying coal from nearby collieries on the river's west side, where it joined the Leamside line (part of the North Eastern Railway), and on to Sunderland. The railway fell into disuse at some time in the early part of the 20th century. The Sunderland and South Shields Water Company used the site to carry two water mains over the river. The present iron footbridge was built at a later date, incorporating the water pipes.
