| Information | |
Belmont Viaduct is a dramatic abandoned railway viaduct high over the River Wear in County Durham, two miles downstream, to the north-west, of Durham city centre at Framwellgate Moor.
The viaduct once carried the Leamside Line, joining Durham to Sunderland. The line was closed in 1964.
At 130 feet high, crossing the Wear on eight arches for 700 feet, the viaduct is a soaring structure, and is a Grade I listed building.[1] It no longer carries a railway line nor can it be used as a public path (and indeed has barely a parapet) though consideration has been given to opening the bridge as a cycleway.
