Black Hill is a hill of 1,916 feet, in the midst of Dartmoor, its summit immediately south of Cranmere Pool.
Cranmere Pool, and thus Black Hill on which it lies, which may be regarded as the very centre of Dartmoor as it is the source of the rivers flowing in all directions: the Taw flowing north to the Bristol Channel, the West Okement flowing to the northern moorlands, the East Dart flowing south and east to the English Channel at Dartmouth and the Teign eastwards to Teignmouth, and the streams that form of the Tavy flowing south-west to Tavistock and the Tamar.
