More than twenty British counties now have flags registered with the Flag Institute. For those currently flagless shires a number of proposed designs are available.

Types of flag

Such proposals as currently exist, generally feature charges, symbols or motifs that hold a distinct local pedigree and are therefore obvious candidates for registration as the flag of any respective county. In certain cases a design may recall an ancient attribution or association and be presented without further amendment, an example of this is the proposed Flag of Caernarfonshire. Other designs include a locally meaningful charge in a novel pattern. Examples of this are the proposed Flag of Northamptonshire and Flag of Staffordshire A third category is the straightforward banner of arms used by a local county council, the proposed Flag of Cumberland and Flag of Cheshire being examples. Finally, a fourth type is an entirely novel design such as the proposed Flag of Oxfordshire.
