The Ardnamurchan Point Lighthouse stands at Ardnamurchan Point, overlooking the Sea of the Hebrides. This point is at the end of the single road along the Ardnamurchan peninsula, mainland Great Britain's westernmost extent. Ardnamurchan Point is usually taken to be the westernmost point of the island, though the actual westernmost spot is Corrachadh Mòr, less than a mile to the south and only a few yards further west than Ardnamurchan point.
The lighthouse was built here in 1849. In January 1852, it was damaged by a severe storm, and was repaired and strengthened. Today the light is fully automated.
Remote as it is, the lighthouse has a visitors' centre, the honestly named Ardnamurchan Lighthouse Visitor Centre, which is remarkably popular.
