Fangfoss is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is to be found eleven miles east of the City of York in the heart of the county and three and a half miles north-west of Pocklington in the East Riding. It belongs to the Harthill Wapentake in the west of the Riding.
Together with Bolton, the village forms a civil parish named 'Fangfoss with Bolton', which encompasses also the hamlet of Spittal, lying between the two villages.
About the village
The parish church of St Martin is designated a Grade II* listed building.[1]
The village also has a primary school and pub. A village park was created to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee and is called Jubilee Park.[2]
Fangfoss Hall is designated a Grade II* listed building.[3]
In 1823 Fangfoss was listed as the parish of 'Fangfoss-with-Spittle', and the parish had a population was 154, with occupations including twelve farmers, a shopkeeper, a shoemaker, and a schoolmaster. The landlord of The Carpenter's public house was also a village carpenter. The village chapel was in the charge of the vicar of Barnby-upon-the-Moor, and under the patronage of the Dean of York.[4]
Fangfoss was served by Fangfoss railway station on the York to Beverley Line between 1847 and 1959.[5] In 1987 the station was given a Grade II listed building status.[6]
Events
Fangfoss hosts an annual arts festival called Fangfest.
