River Evelix near Rearquhar

The River Evelix (Gaelic: Èibhleag) is a river in the south-east of Sutherland.

The Evelix draws water from some 30 square miles of rugged moorland and farmland. To its south is the Kyle of Sutherland and to its west the River Shin.

The river emerges from Loch an Lagain on the southern slopes of Beinn Domhnaill, and from here follows a course south-eastwards, passes through farmland only on its whole course, with no more than hamlets by it; from Achvaich, a lane follows it down though. By the scattered hamlet of Evelix in the coastal plain, the river turns suddenly to the south-west and enters Loch Evelix.

Loch Evelix was once a small estuary but it has been dammed and is now a freshwater lake. Escaping water then enters the Dornoch Firth at Meikle Ferry, just west of the north end of the Dornoch Bridge.
