Lindrick
Lindrick was an ancient district found spread across part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and apparently into Nottinghamshire, where the village of Carlton in Lindrick is found, close by the Yorkshire border.
The name of the district appears to be is derived from the Old English for "raised, straight strip marked by lime trees".
Lindrick seems to have reached as far as Lindrick Dale, Laughton Lindrick Wood, which lay next to Roche Abbey, and the Lindrick area of Tickhill. In 1848, Lindrick was noted as the name of 'an extra-parochial liberty in the Lower division of the Wapentake of Claro, W. riding of York, 2¾ miles (W. by S.) from Ripon; containing 17 inhabitants. It comprises 800 acres, divided into two wellcultivated farms. The tithes have been commuted for £8. 10., payable to the Dean and Chapter of Ripon'.[1]
