Information

The Leaderfoot Bridge is a modern, concrete bridge carrying the A68 across the River Tweed at the foot of Lauderdale: the crossing point is just above where the Leader Water joins the Tweed. Both ends of the bridge are in Roxburghshire: the border of Berwickshire runs down the Leader before following the Tweed further downstream.

The bridge was built in 1971-1973, and replaced the old Georgian bridge at this point: the latter (Drygrange Old Bridge) still crosses the river, just upstream.

The three bridges

Immediately upstream, to the west of the bridge is the Drygrange Old Bridge built in 1776-1780, and upstream of that is the Leaderfoot Viaduct, a disused railway viaduct. The three are near the site of the Roman fortress and settlement of Trimontium, just to the south-west of the bridges. This group of three bridges is therefore sometimes known as 'Tripontium'.
