Jed Water
The Jed Water is a river and a tributary of the River Teviot, flowing entirely in Roxburghshire.
In total Jed Water is over 20 miles long. It rises in the Wauchope Forest, in a series of hillside burns running off the lopes of the Cheviot Hills, very close to the source also of the Rule Water. The triple watershed of the Cheviots is here: the streams north of Peel Fell flow to the Teviot and thence to the Tweed and the North Sea, while to the south the Liddle Water to the south flows down Liddesdale and to the Irish Sea, and the Kielder Water to the Tyne.
From the forest here, the Jed Water flows north, and flows into the Teviot near Jedfoot Bridge (NT660243).
The river in past times was the main source of water for the monks living in Jedburgh Abbey. It also powered a watermill in the town of Jedburgh although this no longer exists. Its name is reflected in, or reflects, Jedburgh. The Jed Forest is named for the river which waters it.
