Grantham Sound is a bay on the west coast of East Falkland, amongst the Falkland Islands, which opens out into the middle of Falkland Sound.[1]
At its landward end, the bay narrows and becomes Brenton Loch (sometimes included as a part of it).[2]
Mount Usborne, the islands’ highest point, overlooks the Sound.
A Victorian report on the islands for the Colonial Office observed:
Grantham Sound immediately adjoins Sussex Harbour; it appears to be dangerous , and difficult of navigation, and has no good harbours within it . The waters of Grantham Sound nearly meet those of Choiseul Sound at Darwin Harbour; the little isthmus that divides them being only one mile in width, and having two freshwater lagoons, 400 yards in diameter, upon it; sealers frequently carry their boats across itTo the south of Grantham Sound are the following good harbours ; Swan Island Harbour, Port King, Wharton Harbour, Findlay Harbour, Ruggles Bay, having within it Moffit's Harbour and Danson Harbour
Along with San Carlos Water, Grantham Sound is one of the proposed sites for the East Falkland terminal for an anticipated ferry to West Falkland.
