Garbh Chioch Mhor is a mountain in Inverness-shire, which reaches a height of 3,323 feet at its summit, and so it qualifies as a Munro.

The mountain stands at the head of Glen Dessary overlooking Loch Nevis to the west. It is part of a group of four Munros that lie to the south of Loch Quoich that can be grouped together into one large expedition as they are all connected by a high series of ridges and cols, though the route is extremely demanding and it can with felicity be split into two separate outings.

Garbh Chioch Mhòr sits in the middle of the group connected by high cols to Sgùrr na Cìche to the west and Sgùrr nan Coireachan to the east.

The northern slopes of Garbh Chioch Mhor are bitten into by a large corrie separating Garbh Chioch Mhor from Sgurr na Ciche.

Ascent

Access to the northern slope is by way of a sharp rocky ridge passing Bealach na h-Eangair, which requires a rewarding scramble.

The ridge walk east to Sgùrr nan Coireachan is more timid but still fairly demanding, again a high col connects the two.

The summit affords breathtaking views down Loch Nevis to the west and Loch Quoich to the north-east as well as a whole broad vista of the wondrous Knoydart mountains in all directions.

Garbh Chioch Mhor is usually climbed together with the other Munros of the South Loch Quoich ridge; a demanding day. Beware however that the remote situation of these hills means a long approach and accordingly an overnight expedition, though it is said that an overnight all-day expedition in Knoydart is a must for anyone serious in the enjoyment of the mountains of the Highlands.
