Crackpot Cave is a limestone cave beneath the moorland hills known as Summer Lodge, in the high moorland rising between Swaledale to the north and Wensleydale to the south, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is within the gorgeous area of Yorkshire known as the Yorkshire Dales.
The village of Crackpot sits within Swaledale, a mile north of the cave mouth and is believed to be named after the cave. The particular hillside beneath which Crackpot Cave is found is known as Scurvey Scar.
The cave contains a fine example of a column, where a stalactite has joined up with its stalagmite. The main entrance to the cave is now closed though, so to get to this column a caver must pass along the aptly named Knee-wrecker Passage.
