Claife is a parish in Lancashire, filling the strip of land between Windermere to the east and Esthwaite Water to the west, which is the ridge of the Furness Fells known as the Claife Heights. There is no village named Claife, but several hamlets within the parish: the nearest village of any size by road is Hawkshead at the head of Esthwaite, though the bustling lakeside towns on the Westmorland shore of Windermere are a short boat ride away.

In the 2011 census the parish had a population of just 298. Smaller places in the parish include two villages, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey in the south; and the hamlets of High Wray, Low Wray, Colthouse and Loanthwaite in the north.

About the parish

In the central area of the parish is Claife Heights, a hilly area which rises to 800 feet above sea level at Latterbarrow and contains several tarns.[1] There is one major road in the parish, the B5285 connecting Hawkshead to the Windermere Ferry terminus at Far Sawrey.

At Low Wray is Wray Castle, a 19th-century house and grounds now owned by the National Trust. Many of the woodlands in the parish, including the area alongside Windermere are part of the National Trust's Hawkshead and Claife property.[2]
