Carsphairn and Scaur Hills
The Carsphairn and Scaur Hills amongst the Southern Uplands are those hills in the north of Kirkcudbrightshire and spreading into southern Ayrshire. The two ranges form an oval of hills between the Galloway Hills to the west and the Lowther Hills to the east, edged by the Water of Deugh and the Glenkins at the western edge and Nithsdale to the east.
The hills consist of:
- The Carsphairn Hills in the west, with Cairnsmore of Carsphairn in their heart and
- The Scaur Hills in the east through which the Scaur Water and its tributaries run.
The two ranges adjoin each other, one from the other divided by the dale of the Water of Ken and a belt of wooded lower ground, though there is no great divide; indeed the Scaur Water rises on the Carsphairn Hills before running down though a dale it cuts through the hills which bear its name. The Carsphairn and Scaur Hills are usually treated together in publications, but there is no common name for the two ranges.
