Broughton is a village in Peeblesshire, in the parish of Broughton, Glenholm and Kilbucho. It Broughton stands beside the Biggar Water, near where it flows into the River Tweed, about four miles east of Biggar, and nine miles west of the county town, Peebles.

The village has a post office, village store, tea room/bistro, bowling green, tennis courts, a village hall, a petrol station and a garage.

Culture

The village is best known as the one-time home of John Buchan; soldier, author of adventure novels such as The Thirty-Nine Step and later Governor-General of Canada. The Biggar Museum Trust until recently ran a museum in the village dedicated to his life in Broughton.[1]

Also in the village stands Broughton Place, a private house built in the style of a 17th-century tower house, which was designed by Basil Spence in 1938 and incorporates decorative reliefs by architectural sculptor Hew Lorimer.[2] The village contains six listed buildings.[3]

Transport links

The Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway had a station and its headquarters here, which was later absorbed into the Caledonian Railway.[4] The line is now closed. The Talla Railway led from here to the Talla Reservoir.

The village is located on the A701 and B7106 roads, and is located at the western end of the John Buchan Way footpath.[5]
