Birse is a parish in southern Aberdeenshire adjacent to the borders with Angus and Kincardineshire. Adjacent parishes are Aboyne and Glen Tanar and Kincardine O'Neil to the west and north, Lochlee in Angus to the south-west and Strachan in Kincardineshire to the south-east. There is a small border with Banchory-Ternan to the north-east.
The parish includes the communities of Finzean and Ballogie. However the name Birse is often used to refer only to the north-western part of the parish which lies on the south side of the River Dee, opposite the village of Aboyne. The south-west part of the parish is a sparsely populated upland area known as the Forest of Birse.
