The Balæna Valley is found at the head of Kinnes Cove, in the west of Joinville Island, off the Trinity Peninsula, Graham Land's north-eastern tip.

The valley was named following a survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from Hope Bay in 1953-54.

The valley was named after a ship, the Balæna (formerly the Mjolnar), built at Drammen in Norway, in 1872: the Balæna, commanded by Alexander Fairweather, was one of the barques of Dundee Whaling Expedition of 1892–93, which visited the Joinville Island Group. Other features namesd after this expedition include Active Sound, Diana Reef and Cape Kinnes, and Dundee Island.
