Abbotrule is a hamlet south of the B6357 road, in Roxburghshire on the Rule Water. Places nearby include Bedrule, Hallrule, Spittal-on-Rule, Ruletownhead, Bonchester Bridge, Denholm, Southdean, Hobkirk, Ferniehirst Castle and the Wauchope Forest.
Abbotrule was once part of the Abbotrule Estate. Its church belonged to Jedburgh Abbey from the 13th century until the Reformation.
The Rule Water, from which this place derives its name, it just below the village: Abbotrule's own stream, the Fodrlee Burn, runs into the Rule just to the north. A mile to the south-west of the hamlet is Bonchester Hill, which bears some impressive Iron Age earthworks, and over the hill sits the village of Bonchester Bridge.
