Spittal-on-Rule is a hamlet in Roxburghshire – barely more today than a farmstead and attendant cottages. It is to be found beside the River Teviot, off the A698 road, four miles west of Jedburgh. The Rule Water, flowing north from the hills, enters the Teviot at Spittal-on-Rule.
The name of the place is from the mediæval word for a hostelry or hospital. The remains of a hospital or leper house of the Middle Ages is found here.[1]
The Rule Bridge crosses the Rule Water by the village. An interesting, disused, semi-circular stone bridge, it was built the Douglases of Cavers in 1748. The modern Spittal-on-Rule Bridge stands beside it.
