Staveley is a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is four miles north of Knaresborough and near the A1(M).
The 2011 Census recorded a population of 450.
The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Gospatric.[1] The name 'Staveley' is from the Old English language, and means 'stave-meadow', or effectively then 'clearing where the staves are gathered'.[2]
History
The racehorse Staveley, winner of the 1805 St Leger Stakes, was born at nearby Boroughbridge.[3]
The village used to have a railway station on the now disused Pilmoor, Boroughbridge and Knaresborough Railway. When it opened, it was called Staveley, but from 1881 its name was taken from nearby Copgrove village to avoid confusion with Staveley in Derbyshire.[4]
The Church of All Saints was built in 1864. The church replaces an earlier structure which is believed to have existed since Mediæval times.[5] Today it is a grade II listed building.[6]
About the village
The village pub is the Royal Oak.
The railway line: abandoned for several years, it is now a significant feature of the landscape to the south east of the village.[7]
A nature reserve near the village provides long walk that stretches beyond Staveley. The reserve has many wild and rare species of flower and wildlife.[8]
