Newport Cathedral - St Woolos' parish church

St Woolos is an ancient parish covering the centre of Newport in Monmouthshire. It stretches from the River Usk in the east to the Ebbw River in the west and forms part of the Wentloog Hundred. The population in 2015 was 33,000.

The name Woolos is a corruption of Gwynllyw, the legendary founder and patron saint of the City of Newport. His name is also etymologically connected to Wentloog from that of his kingdom Gwynllwg.
