Upper Hackney is a village in Derbyshire, standing to the north-west of Matlock and extending from the edge of its townscape, running parallel to the River Derwent. A little lower on the slope of the dale towards the river, by left unnamed on maps, is Hackney. Further up the river to the north-west is Darley Dale. The A6 road and the Peak Rail railway run by, between Upper Hackney and the Derwent.
There is a Methodist chapel in the village, whilst the nearest Church of England church is St Helens' Church in Darley Dale.
Close to the current Hackney Methodist Church is the former Primitive Methodist Chapel which was replaced by the current Chapel in 1908. Further up the village is the former Mission Church of St Philip and St James which closed around the end of the last century and is now a house.
