Fiddleford is a hamlet in Dorset, is situated between Sturminster Newton and Okeford Fitzpaine, on the bank of the River Stour.
The name of the village appears to be from the Old English Fitelan ford, meaning 'Fitela's Ford' after an otherwise unknown progenitor. (The name 'Fitela' is known in ancient Germanic legend, in a lost English version of the Niebelungen saga referenced in Beowulf.) The ford crosses the River Stour. The place-name appears as Fitelford in 1244.[1]
About the village
Fiddleford has approximately 25 houses, a manor house by the river (Fiddleford Manor), a public house (the Fiddleford Inn), and a large mushroom farm.
South-west of Fiddleford is Piddles Wood.
Every second month, residents of Fiddleford produce the 'Fiddleford Flyer', a local magazine.
