of Furniture Makers

Furniture Makers' Hall is a Victorian terraced building standing on Austin Friars in the City of London. It is the livery hall of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, one of the Livery Companies of the City.

The Furniture Makers' Company is one of the more modern of the livery companies: it was formed only in 1952, and was granted livery by the City in 1963, being the 83rd in order of precedence.

The building however is older: it was built in 1882 and still has many of the original Victorian features from when it was built, as well as bespoke wood furniture and fittings, including an ornate oak staircase running through the centre of the building.[1]

The Company acquired the freehold of 12 Austin Friars in 2007, and transformed it into Furniture Makers' Hall. The building has been refurbished to create a welcoming, well-designed venue for membership events.

The Company's main publication is now named 'Austin Friar'.[2]

Charity functions

The Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association, later known as the Furnishing Industry Trust, operates from the Hall. The charity is a Victorian foundation dedicated to helping people in the furnishing industry in times of hardship. The Furniture Makers’ Company merged with the Trust in 2013.[3] During the same year, the Company celebrated its 50th anniversary and was honoured with the grant of a Royal Charter.
