Schiehallion from Loch Rannoch

The Glen Lyon Hills stretch out north of Glen Lyon in Perthshire, and are essentially part of the wider district of Rannoch. Amongst the Glen Lyon Hills and Rannoch are seven munros, including the famous Schiehallion.

The hills stretch along the full length of Glen Lyon, which has been described as the most beautiful glen in the Highlands in autumn.

Climbing

The approach to the hills will depend on the target area. For the westerly Càrn Mairg to Càrn Gorm, walkers will start from Invervar. To scale Schiehallion, the eastern outlier, most walkers start from the Forestry Commission car park at Brae of Foss (on the minor road over the hills between Kinloch Rannoch and the Strath of Appin. This latter mountain is so popular than a broad path, nicknamed a 'foot motorway' has been created up the mountain.

Another walk, below the peaks, is around Loch Lyon, where a footpath follows the whole shoreline, if one interrupted by burns to be forded.
