Thornhill is a village in Cumberland, to the south of Whitehaven and north of Seascale. It is a few miles inland form the Irish Sea, close to St Bees.
The village was created by Whitehaven Rural District Council and Egremont Urban District Council in the 1920s, as part of the national campaign to improve housing conditions, to provide the government's policy of "Homes fit for Heroes" after the First World War. Tenants moved into the first completed houses, on Thorny Road, late in 1921.
Parish church
The parish church is Thornhill Mission. The church was built after the creation of the village as a chapel of ease within the parish of St John Beckermet so that parishioners need not travel to Beckermet to attend church. It remains within the Benefice of Beckermet
About the village
The village has a small shop with sub-post office, and a social club. It has a primary school (Thornhill Primary School) in the centre of the village. There is also a community park and play area.
A football pitch, owned by the parish council, is used by Thornhill Football Club.
