Altnacaillich and Ben Hope

Strathmore is a broad valley in Sutherland. The strath is in the parish of Durness to the east of Loch Eriboll. The valley is that of the Strathmore River, flowing due north from the meeting of streams at Gobernuisgach Lodge, to Loch Hope, a long loch whose foot is less than a mile from the open sea.

The remains of the Dùn Dornaigil broch stand at the edge of Strathmore. At its northern stretch, as Ben Hope rises to the east, the sides of the valley become high and beset with cliffs.

The strath has a minor road running alongside the Strathmore River northwards towards Loch Hope.

Strathmore is the home of the Scottish Gaelic poet, Rob Donn.
