Information |
Saint Paul's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Diocese of St Helena. It is to be found approximately two miles south of Jamestown on St Helena, the main island of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and while the cathedral has been deemed sufficient grounds for granting Jamestown the status of a city, the cathedral actually stands in the neighbouring district, St Paul's.
St Paul's replaced "the Country Church" which existed from the early days of St Helenian colonisation in the late 17th century. Building work on the new church began in 1850, was completed in 1851 and the church became the cathedral in 1859 when the Diocese of St Helena was established. At the time the diocese included the islands of Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, but the latter has since been transferred off to the See of Cape Town.
The cathedral is designated a Grade I listed building.[1] Nearby is Plantation House, also Grade I listed.
