Half Tree Hollow is a village on the north coast of St Helena developed as a suburb of Jamestown, the island's capital.
The village is built at the top of the hill above Jamestown, beneath Fort Knoll. It is at the top of the 699 steps of Jacob's Ladder, a hillside stairway connecting it with Jamestown. It is also joined, les romantically, by the Ladder Hill Road.
Half Tree Hollow was built because of the lack of adequate space in Jamestown. Since Jamestown lies within a cleft with steep cliffs rising at either side, its growth is strictly constrained by its location. Today, Half Tree Hollow actually has a population that is greater than that of Jamestown. In 2008 it had a population of 901, compared to a population of 1,140 in 1998.[1] Outside access to the village is still from Jamestown.
