Cairngaan on the Rhinns of Galloway, is the southmost settlement in Wigtownshire (which makes it the southernmost village of Scotland). It sits just north of the Mull of Galloway, the county's most southerly pointon which stands a lighthouse but no more).

Cairngaan is close to the craggy west coast of the south Rhins from where looks out over the North Channel with Ulster on the horizon. It is reached by land on the B7041, after a turn-off from the B7065 road. It is at the extreme end of the B7401; as the road comes from an area that is already remote and goes only to this village, it can be said that the only reason to travel it is to experience what it is like to be at Scotland's most southerly settlement.

Nearby villages include Drummore and Kirkmaiden to the near north. The nearest town is the port of Stranraer, 18 miles to the west, and the nearest city is Belfast, across the channel, 38 miles away.
