Windlestraw Law is the highest of the Moorfoot Hills. Its summit marks the border between Selkirkshire to the east and Peeblesshire to the west. Just to the north of Windlestraw Law is the three-shire point where Peeblesshire, Selkirkshire and Midlothian meet.
Many burns run off the slopes of this mountain, amongst them the headwaters of the Leithen Water and of the Caddon Water, which flow in opposite directions, to the west and the east respectively, but which both make their way eventually southwards to the River Tweed.
