Tintern AbbeyTintern Abbey is a glorious ruin in Monmouthshire standing above the bank of the River Wye which forms the border with Gloucestershire. It was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, in 1131 and was only the second Cistercian foundation in Britain. The ruins inspired Wordsworth's poem 'Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey', Tennyson's poem 'Tears, Idle Tears', Allen Ginsberg's 'Wales Visitation', and more than one painting by Turner. The village of Tintern adjoins the abbey ruins. (Read more) |
