North RonaldsayNorth Ronaldsay is the northernmost of the isles of Orkney. It lies around two and a half miles north of its nearest neighbour, Sanday. Low lying and exposed, the island's climate is changeable and frequently inclement. The surrounding waters, stormy and treacherous, have been a notorious ships' graveyard. North Ronaldsay has a unique dry-stane dyke that surrounds the island whose purpose is to keep the seaweed-eating North Ronaldsay sheep off the arable land. (Read more) |
