Low Bridge of Tarff, near Tongland

The Tarff Water is a tributary of the River Dee in the Galloway Hills of Kirkcudbrightshire.

The river rises in the burns running off the hills, which feed Loch Mannoch. The loch itself is fed by the Glengap Burn, the Anstool Burn and many others: the Glengap Burn, the largest, flowing from Loch Wingeon, has its ultimate source on the Fell of Laghead. The name "Tarff" though attaches only to the river draining Loch Mannoch.

From the loch, the river flows at first eastward, tumbling over the Kirkconnell Linn, passing close to Kirkconnell hamlet, and from here flows due south. An ancient hill fort looks down on its dale from Back Fell to the east and the A762 runs down the dale on its route from New Galloway to join the A75 at Ringford.

The Tarff Water becomes tidal and enters the head of the estuary of the River Dee above Kirkcudbright, the mingled waters pasing through the county town to the Solway Firth.
