Tail Burn
The Tail Burn is a stream in northern Dumfriesshire, known for providing one of the county's most famous spectacles, a tall waterfall called the Grey Mare's Tail. The stream is named after the fall.
The Tail Burn begins in a number of minor streams flowing off Firthybrig Head, close by the very northernmost point of the county, on the border with Ayrshire.
These headwater burns flow just a matter of yards before tumbling over crags and into Loch Skeen, a sizable tarn some 1,300 yards long.
The Tail Burn emerges from the foot of the loch and heads south. It is a short stream; after just less than a mile it tumbles over the slope of Bran Law, in the 200-foot long cascades of the Grey Mare's Tail, much admired from A708 road below.
Below the falls and under the road, the burn joins a stream off the hills in the north east to form the Moffat Water.
